On Saturday the 21st April, Sydney’s infamous Coogee beach (Bondi’s baby brother) played host to the world’s biggest water balloon fight thanks to major sponsor Xbox. Picture it, 2,921 participants divided into two teams launching over 55,000 water balloons at each other. Thats a lot of water! Balloons were launched with a count down arrival of a chopper hovering above the crowd.

Shigeo Fukuda has masterfully recreated Escher’s Waterfall where water seems to flow uphill in a small scale model.

Neat eh? I always like it when they divulge the secret at the end. It kind of reminds me of that dragon illusion.

Check out this video of an intersection in India. One might say that slightly different rules apply over there.

Check out this funny short film called Ten by Scott Smith. It’s just in time for the Easter long weekend.

Amazing. This last one is apparently a self portrait.
Ron Mueck is an Australian hyper-realist sculptor who creates gargantuan-sized sculptures that capture details of the human body so well that they’re hard to believe. Mueck is a master at capturing human expression and recreating the detail of muscles, skin, fat and bones that we are all made of.

Update: I actually got to see his work up close at an exhibition in Edinburgh. They are even more lifelike when you see them in person. A two dimensional photograph simply does not communicate how realistic Mueck’s art actually is.
Update (2009−11−19): Here is another article about “hyperrealists” such as Mueck.

There seem to be quite a number of internet-organized games and flashmobs going down these days. Vancouver has seen giant pillow fights, zombie attacks, huge games of hide and seek, and apparently a city wide fight to the death by want-to-be assassins… all right under our noises. While all these activities are interesting, this Street Wars contest really sounds like the exciting one.
Upon registering with Street Wars you receive an envelope containing the name, address, phone numbers and photo of your target. You have three weeks to hunt them down, and spring a surprise attack on them. By this we don’t mean jumping out from behind a bush screaming BOO, it’s more like a strategic ambush. One may choose to pose as a postman and upon answering the door, soak their target, which ‘kills’ them. Once ‘dead’ you take your victims envelope and begin to hunt down their intended target. And so on. This continues until the target you assassinate has your photo in their envelop. You win Cash, your life and get to stay dry!
Here are part 1 and part 2 of a news segment about the tournament. It’s somewhat anti-climatic but still a lot of fun.

Update: Sounds like this week they are playing a large session of dodgeball near the Vancouver Art Gallery instead of the usual Manhunt games.

Bert Monroy released his latest Photoshop painting this week after 11 months of work with an estimated 2,000 hours. The attention to detail is amazing in this 10 foot wide poster.
Apparently the flattened file weighs in at whopping 1.7GB. Check out the site to see just how much detail is in this image.

You pull the pin on the grenade, and an LED goes on to confirm that the unit is armed and “live”. After approximately 3 seconds, the alarm will turn on and the LED will go out. The alarm turns off when the pin is replaced.

It’s not exactly an illusion… more of a fun “Where’s Waldo” type puzzle. Try and find the face hidden in this picture. To be honest, it took me a good couple of minutes to find it.
Once you find the face in this coffee beans pile, every time you look at this picture you will see it immedately.
