The 200 Greatest Songs of the 1960s

Pitchfork Media has a week long series on their top 200 picks for the best music of the 1960s. Go take a look.

Of course, we recognize that even at 200 tracks, our list leaves off hundreds of other fantastic and amazing songs– not to mention a handful of cuts from the Baby Boomer canon that our staff doesn’t much care for (hello, “Light My Fire”!). But if nothing else, we at least limited the maximum number of tracks per artist to five so that, say, the 14th most popular Beach Boys song (probably “Vega-Tables” or some such) wouldn’t bump off more deserving tracks from less iconic artists.

  • Can you help me put with a song all young Canadians sang at movie theatres in the ’60’s?
    It started with..
Oh, we are young Canadians and we enjoy our fun,
da da da ‚da da da da. da da da da da da
Oh doing our best, to to what’s right..da da da da da

It used to be a standard in all Odeon theatres matinees.
I’d love to have all the words. Our family has all different memories of the lyrics.

    • Came across your post in looking up this song — my wife has just remembered all four lines, but the version she knows rhymes ‘every little thing” with “for God and King” so this goes back well before the 60s.

If you’re still looking for the words, e-mail me at thedsgroup@gmail.com and I will send them to you.

  • I think that with so many good songs that came out in the 60’s, it’s almost impossible to clasify all of them in a correct order, it becomes too subjective, but i think the list is ok
